The Mommy & Me program is a great opportunity for mothers, fathers, grandparents or nannies to explore the Montessori environment together with a child.

Our experienced teachers show the moms and other caregivers how to introduce certain activities to their children.

Parents then work with their children, and together discover how much fun there is to be had in a Montessori class!

In Mommy & Me, toddlers have the chance to explore many of the enticing Montessori activities on the shelves.

Children learn the process of a classroom, too, from selecting an activity from a shelf to carrying it back at the end of the cycle.

The snack time routine is a great opportunity to learn how to help your toddler do more things for him or herself. And it’s fun, too!

Often, the group will come together after snack for some group time with songs, little rhymes and other activities.

As the children play outside at the end of class, parents have the opportunity to chat with teachers, and get helpful advice on making the most out of the precious but challenging toddler years.

Program Description

Mommy & Me Montessori is a program designed for 18 to 36-month-old children with their parents or caregiver.

Each 8-week session meets once a week for 90 minutes. During that time, you and your child will explore the many Montessori activities on the classroom shelves, join other parents and children for snack, sing songs, hear stories and play together on our beautiful playground. Snacks are provided for the children. Dads, grandparents and nannies are welcome too!

The Tuesday Mommy & Me sessions are led by Jillian Steinkoenig, Head of School at the Orchard Hills campus. Mrs. Steinkoenig comes to LePort Schools with eight years of experience as the supervisor of the infant and toddler program at a successful Montessori school. There, Mrs. Steinkoenig pulled together a team of seven co-teachers to create a safe, nurturing learning environment. Mrs. Steinkoenig has her B.S. in psychology and human resources. Her serene enthusiasm for children and for Montessori makes her a wonderful role model for students, parents and teachers alike. She’s excited to be sharing her love of the Montessori approach and her deep experience dealing with the many facets of a developing toddler’s needs with parents in the Mommy and Me program.

The Wednesday and Saturday Mommy & Me sessions will be led by Michelle Caruth, a Montessori Head Primary Teacher. Ms. Caruth has 15 years teaching experi­ence as a Montessori teacher. She received her B.S. in early child­hood education in 1993, earned her AMI Montessori certificate from the Washington Montessori Institute in 1995, and subsequently completed her Masters of Education at Loyola Col­lege in Baltimore. Ms. Caruth recently relocated to South­ern California with her husband and two children, ages 6 and 8, who attend the Montessori program at LePort Schools.

The Mommy & Me session will be led by an experienced Montessori teacher, Miss Janine Bowman. Ms. Bowman has been involved in Montessori education for over 25 years. She attended the Montessori Institute of Los Angeles and the International Montessori Institute in Sage, California, and completed her administrative certificate at UCLA. Ms. Bowman was Head of School at two different Montessori schools, before joining the Huntington Pier campus as a Head Primary Teacher.

The Saturday Mommy & Me Sessions will be led by Mrs. Elizabeth Darst, a Head Primary Teacher. Mrs. Darst graduated in 1993 from Oregon State University with a B.S. in History, and she received her AMI Diploma from the Montessori Institute Northwest in 1995. She then taught at a Montessori school in Portland, OR for the next twelve years. Mrs. Darst is the mother of two children who have attended Montessori since preschool, and one of whom currently attends the Montessori elementary program at LePort. Ever since her children have been little, she has applied Montessori principles at home, enabling her children to be real contributors in the family and to become very self-reliant and independent at an early age. Mrs. Darst is very excited to be able to share her Montessori teaching and parenting insights with families in the Mommy & Me program.
