Curriculum

Language Arts

Mastering skills in language arts is essential for clear thinking and precise communication. Our painless, step-by-step approach guarantees that your child will enjoy developing superior skills in spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and writing.

Mathematics

A solid foundation in math not only helps children to function in their daily lives, but also prepares them for the higher-level mathematics necessary to grasp the advanced sciences. LePort schools uses the outstanding Saxon Math program, which is based upon incremental development and continual review.

Saxon's 4 – 8 Program builds upon the hands-on approach of our Primary and Lower Elementary Montessori Program. Although some hands-on activities are included in the 4 – 8 series, the focus shifts gradually from the use of concrete objects to mathematical computations and problem solving using pencil and paper.

History

In order to understand and evaluate ourselves and our society, we must know our past. Our students embark on a fascinating chronological study of Ancient Civilizations through the Twentieth century. At LePort Schools, history is not taught as names and dates to be memorized, but as an exciting story told through the lives of great statesmen, philosophers, innovators and artists.

Our teachers use history to organize and unify the curriculum. For instance, when your child is learning about Ancient Greece in history, she will also be reading The Odyssey in literature and studying the famous Greek scientist, Archimedes, in science class.

Through the study of history, students learn the power of ideas in shaping civilizations, how to identify causes and their effects, how to distinguish fact from opinion, and how to draw principles from concretes. Our students of history grasp not only what happened, but why.

Science

The purpose of studying science is to understand the nature of the physical world. Through individual instruction, small group sessions, selected readings, and hands-on experiments, students study past discoverers and their discoveries. In the process, our students not only master basic scientific concepts, but also learn how to think like scientists – systematically and objectively.

Literature

Reading great literature gives children the opportunity to enter exciting worlds, to meet heroic characters, and to consider what could be. While studying the classics of yesterday and today, students not only improve their thinking and communication skills, but also learn important moral lessons, lessons they can use to guide their lives. Our students learn about independence from To Kill a Mockingbird, integrity from Antigone, and heroic perseverance from The Miracle Worker.

Among the engaging literary works being read by your child, many will be selected to connect with the historical period under study. This chronological approach benefits your child in two important ways: familiarity with a novel's historical setting makes reading more interesting and comprehensible; as well, reading literature brings a historical period to life in an exciting and dramatic way.

During literature class students will engage in a variety of activities: they will memorize and recite poetry; dramatize scenes from classic plays; summarize plots; and analyze the literary elements of theme, character, setting and style.
