Upper Elementary & Junior High - Spelling & Vocabulary
How do our students become expert spellers? They learn the two dozen rules that govern correct spelling of most words in English. Based on phonetics (the sounds of words), these rules are easy to remember and straightforward to apply. More advanced students expand and enrich their vocabulary through the study of Latin and Greek root words. This approach enables students to decipher complex words in their daily reading and on standardized tests.
Grades Four & Five
Our youngest students become expert spellers because they are taught the principles of proper spelling. They are presented, in order, with two dozen rules that govern correct spelling of most words in English. Based on phonetics (the sounds of words), these rules are easy to remember and straightforward to apply.
Students are guided step-by-step into translating phonetic rules into proper spelling, while enlarging their vocabulary and developing their writing skills. Spelling activities are multi-sensory (auditory, visual, tactile) to ensure maximum retention. Before long, you will see your child spell with confidence and ease, thus demonstrating the power of learning by principles!
Grades Six through Eight
Students who have mastered basic spelling rules expand and enrich their vocabulary through the study of Latin and Greek root words, the building blocks of the English language. When students learn, for instance, that the Greek root “chron” means time, they are equipped to decipher many more complex words, such as chronological, synchronize, and anachronism, in their daily reading and on standardized tests.
Exercises Include:
- Learning definitions and derivations
- Engaging in word analysis
- Identifying synonyms and antonyms
