Grammar Test
Grade 7

If you are not a grammarphile, there is a good chance that this seventh grade grammar test makes about as much sense as a foreign language. All those direct objects and indirect objects, compound subjects and prepositional phrases likely mash together into a meaningless garble. It would be quite reasonable, therefore, to wonder what the value of it all is. After all, most adults get along quite well without worrying about participles. The same, of course, could be said about algebra, and indeed, the comparison to mathematics is apt. Much like math, a great deal of what grammar class teaches is how to think—in the case of grammar, it is the ability to understand and use complex language. What many adults have learnt piecemeal, students at LePort are learning systematically and explicitly. Even if the opportunity to diagram an ambiguous fine-print, sale restriction at a grocery store never presents itself, what they will have gained is precision in their understanding and expression of language.
