Vocabulary classes at LePort are anything but rote memorization of definitions. Students in our vocabulary classes decipher the meanings of increasingly challenging words from their Latin and Greek roots, a skill they can use anytime they encounter unfamiliar words in the future. Students then engage in numerous exercises that encourage thinking about the words’ meaning in the context of their own lives – whether or not they would want a vain friend (and why), how they would mollify their very upset little sister, or where they’re likely to hear a monologue. And as you can see in this 6th grade vocabulary test, students not only learn these words, but master using them, both in their speech and in their writing.
