Literature & Language Arts

Our students practice writing in cursive, forming sentences, and using correct punctuation and capital letters. This helps them become confident writers. We introduce grammar, using Montessori symbols to teach parts of speech like verbs, nouns, and adjectives. We use phonics to help our students sound out words and build their vocabulary. They also learn to look up new words in the dictionary, which helps them understand what they read.

Math

Math

Our students use Primary materials such as the Bead Cabinet and Golden Beads to review math concepts like place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These tools help them understand math before solving problems in their heads. As our students progress, they begin learning about fractions and decimals. By the end of 3rd grade, they work with numbers up to the millions. They work with pencil and paper, ensuring a true understanding of these core math operations, instead of moving to a calculator.

Science

Science

In life science, our students learn about plants and animals by sorting them based on their features. They also study life cycles and how animals and plants live together. In physical science, they learn about matter, energy, and forces. Earth science teaches them about topics like rocks, landforms, and natural changes like erosion. Through experiments, our students explore these ideas and write down what they see in their science journals. They make and test predictions, just like real scientists.

History & Geography

History & Geography

Our students learn history and geography through Montessori’s Five Great Lessons. These stories teach them about the universe, life on Earth, early humans, and how writing began. In geography, our students study landforms, countries, continents, and the cultures from around the world. They learn how people in different places find food, shelter, and transportation, which helps them understand how we are alike and different. Our students also use maps, globes, and compasses to build key geography skills.

Soft Skills

Soft Skills

Our students stay motivated by choosing their own tasks and working with their friends. They follow their own learning plans, set goals, and manage their time. Our teachers help them along the way to become more independent. Through hands-on projects and teamwork, our students learn how to work well with others. They also have the chance to be leaders by helping their younger classmates. As our students work, they build focus and self-discipline, learning to finish tasks that they start.

Literature & Language Arts

Writing continues to be a focus of the school day as our students work on more complex essays, stories, and research projects. They practice editing their work to improve their writing skills. We help grow their vocabulary by incorporating additional Latin and Greek root words. The use of these root words leads to improved comprehension of new words and more intuitive spelling. Every day, they have time to read books that they choose, without having to fill reading logs or reports.

Math

Math

Our students start working with more advanced math topics including geometry, measuring in both traditional and metric systems, and facts practice. They work with complex word problems to improve their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. They move from using hands-on tools to solving problems in their heads and on paper. In geometry, they explore shapes, angles, lines, and solids. They use tools like rulers and compasses to measure and calculate areas and volumes.

Science

Science

Our students perform more advanced experiments and learn about chemistry, physics, and astronomy. They also continue their study of life sciences, exploring various ecosystems. In our labs, they research topics like matter, energy, the sun, and the atmosphere. They make predictions, test ideas, and learn from their results.

History & Geography

History & Geography

Our students study ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, and modern times by researching important events and their place on a timeline. This approach helps our students begin to see how events from the past have shaped our world today. Our students also work on research projects and make timelines to learn about key events and famous people. In geography, they study maps, climates, and how geography affects people’s lives.

Soft Skills

Soft Skills

As our students grow older, they take more responsibility for their learning. They set their own goals and work on larger tasks. With help from their teachers, they check their progress and stay on track. Our students also practice leadership and teamwork by working on group projects, leading discussions, and sharing their research. These skills help prepare them for middle school and more complex challenges ahead.

Why LePort for Elementary School?

Individualized Attention

With small class sizes, our teachers are able to know each child well and support their specific needs. We maintain student/teacher ratios of 12:1 in lower elementary and 15:1 in upper elementary.

Tailored Learning

We teach lessons in small groups, based on each child’s ability and interests. This helps every student learn at their own pace and grow without feeling compared to others. In a 3-year age mix community (1st-3rd grade, and 4th-6th grade), each student is challenged at the level best suited for them. A 2nd grader may work on math in a group of 3rd graders, but remain with other 2nd grade students for language.

Well-Rounded Program

While reading and math are often the primary focus, as schools teach to standardized tests, we believe in a holistic approach. Our students take science, geography, history, art, and music each day. Field trips and special projects create engaging learning opportunities.

Minimal Homework

With five hours of instruction each day, most lessons and practice happen at school. This keeps homework light while still helping students learn and grow.

Caring Community

Our school reflects our neighborhoods, bringing together families from all walks of life. We hold regular events and encourage open communication between parents and teachers.

Joyful Learning

Our students learn new skills because they are curious, not for rewards like grades or stickers. They are excited to discover new things and love learning.

Learning Outside the Classroom

Field trips help our students build friendships and connect with what they are learning. Going Outs are student-organized trips. These trips help them gain real-world skills, like planning, budgeting, and organizing.

Your Child’s Educational Journey Begins Here.

Our school provides a supportive space where every child thrives. We can’t wait to meet your family, get to know your child, and welcome you to our school community!
